The state government has called the first Union budget by the newly-elected UPA government a disappointment. Gujarat government spokesperson Jaynarayan Vyas and minister Saurabh Patel said that given the global meltdown, the budget was expected to give new hope to all; however, the proposed budget has failed miserably.

The state government also accused the Centre of ignoring fast developing states like Gujarat in the budget. Important issues like employment and development of infrastructure for agriculture are completely ignored,” said Patel.

“The budget has made no provision for coastal security.

Unfortunately, the nation’s fiscal deficit is also beyond government’s control. Fiscal deficit stood at 2.7 % in the year 2008-09, it has now touched 6.2%. Moreover, Gujarat is known for its textile industry, but textile sops are announced only for states ruled by UPA allies,” Vyas said.

“The central government has yet again disapproved the demand of declaring Sardar Sarovar Narmada Yojna a national project. The budget also stands silent on diamond workers’ plight. On the one hand, taxes are announced on import of gold and on the other, discounts are given to branded jewellery. This will only lead to unemployment among gold workers,” added Vyas.
