Kerala finance minister Thomas Isaac today said there has been marked decline in sales tax revenue and government would take "vigorous" steps for achieving higher growth.
The first six months of the current fiscal saw a mere 10% growth in sales tax revenue against average 20% mark achieved in the last three years and government aimed to achieve a growth rate of 15% in the second half, Isaac told a press conference here.
"The fall in the tax revenue could be due to economic recession even as other states in the country had negative growth rate in sales tax revenue", he said.
Expressing concern over the "large-scale evasion" of sales tax at border checkposts, Isaac said government would take stringent steps against those who submit forged documents to evade the tax.
The department would make special arrangements to check the vehicles by taking them from the checkposts, he said adding 463 of 700 trucks were found to be having forged transport documents to evade sales tax and most such cases were marble and granite transporters.
