The government is planning to woo businesses for meeting the country’s target of cutting carbon emission intensity though an ‘outreach programme’.

India has committed to cut emissions by 20-25% by 2020 at the recently concluded Copenhagen climate change summit.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has roped in the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) to prepare the programme that would help reach out to the leaders of the Indian industry, who were earlier apprehensive over the investment required to achieve new energy efficiency norms.
“Our goal is to reach out to the relevant people in the industry.

As an organisation we have our limitations in terms of money, manpower etc. Ficci will help us in taking our policies on energy efficiencies to industry leaders so that they could be implemented without any problems,” said Ajay Mathur, director general, BEE.

The BEE is also formulating new regulations that will set mandatory efficiency targets for as many as 714 manufacturing units in sectors such as thermal power, aluminium, steel, fertiliser, iron and steel, pulp and textiles.

The bureau will consult other industry associations before announcing the final date of the implementation of such norms. Companies which are not able to cut their carbon emissions can either buy energy certificates from firms that have achieved more than the required norms, or face penalties.
