Did the rain disrupt your journey to the income tax office? Did the website too fail to help you on the last day of filing tax returns? Don’t fret, now you have till August 4, 2010 to file income tax returns for money you have earned between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has acted sympathetically with people who run on the last day to file returns and were unable to. “The decision was taken in view of some technical snags in the e-filing computer system, and inclement weather at various locations, due to which taxpayers have reported difficulties in filing or uploading income tax returns,” CBDT said late on Saturday.
All paper returns or e-returns filed on or before 4th August 2010 will be considered as filed within the due date, it has been stated.
Sources at the Income tax office in Bandra Kurla Complex, where salaried employees submit their returns in Mumbai said that there were limited number of people who came to submit the returns. “Yesterday there were many people who filed and the queues were long, in spite of many counters. But today surprisingly not many people came, as compared to last year,” an official, who did not wish to be named said.
It is reliably learnt that there were 2 lakh income tax return forms that were ordered for printing last July. This year the order was reduced to half at the Bandra Kurla Office.
“Many people file returns online these days so, we took that into account,” said the official.
