The auto industry reported better numbers in February compared with January, primarily due to the pre-buying scenario, which was triggered by expectations of a rollback in excise duty and implementation of the new emission norms.

Sales were also high due to the easy availability of finance and buoyant demand. The low-base effect of last year also helped.
Maruti Suzuki inched closer to its aim of achieving one lakh unit monthly sales mark by selling 96,650 units in February, a 22% growth over 79,190 units sold in the same period last year. The company recorded highest-ever monthly sales numbers. Its domestic sales were up 20% at 84,765 units while exports rose 38.8% to 11,885 units.

Hyundai sales for February rose by 42.8% at 54,617 units (38,235). Domestic sales stood 31,001 units (21,215), highest since 1998 when Hyundai launched Santro in September that year, while the exports were up by 38.8% to 23,616 units.

Tata Motors’ total sales went up by 55% year on year (yoy) to 66,190 units (42,493). Its commercial vehicle domestic sales rose 67.16% yoy at 39,205 units (23,454) while passenger vehicles went up 43.7% yoy at 29,241 units (20,348). Exports finally witnessed a revival, rising by 145.60% yoy to 3,237 units (1,318).

M&M reported sales at 27,894 units (19,994) in February, an increase of 39.5%. The increase in numbers of three-wheelers was also contributed by the launch of GiO and will be strengthened by the retailing of Maxximo.

The domestic sales stood at 26,580 units (19,594), an increase of 35.7%. The sale of Logan further declined and settled at 537 units. Exports grew by 228.5% to 1,314 units (300). M&M gained around 8-10% more market share in utility vehicles with sales soaring to 18,280 units (14,720).

Honda Siel sold 6,275 units against 5,579 units, recording an increase of 12.5%. General Motors India registered a record growth of 126 % by selling 11,111 units (4,921).

Toyota Kirloskar Motors recorded a 101% growth with 5,993 units (2,976). Fiat India recorded a growth of 78% (including exports) at 2,335 units (1,309).

In the two-wheeler space, Hero Honda clocked sales of 382,096 units (329,055), a growth of 16%. With cumulative sales of 41,85,492 so far in the fiscal, Hero Honda has handsomely crossed the initial guidance of four million sales, well before the completion of the fiscal year. Bajaj Auto’s total sales stood at 268,678 units (153,782), up by 74.71% yoy while exports touched 77,642 units (50,738).

The high sales have been achieved on the back of Discover and Pulsar brands, which are contributing to almost 80% of the total sales. TVS’ total sales were up 31% to 140,000 units (107,000), whereas Yamaha clocked total sales of sales of 25,766 units (17,407).
