Asian steel production grows in September

Mumbai: Led by China, Asia clocked a 14.9% growth in steel production in September at 69.241 million tonnes even as European Union, CIS, North & South America reported negative growth as compared to the same month last year.

World Steel Association, a leading industry body representing 180 steel producers across 66 countries, said that during September 107.030 million tonnes steel was produced, down by 0.6% from 107.723 million tonnes in September, 2008.

World Steel Association members produced around 98% of the world's total crude steel in 2008.

European Union's steel production came down by 23.7% to 13.171 million tonnes in September as compared to 17.260 million tonnes in the corresponding month last year.

CIS countries including, Turkey, Switzerland and Serbia, collectively produced 8.085 million tonnes as against 9.311 million tonnes in September, 2008.

Steel production in North America and South America fell by 32.3% and 15.4% respectively during September at 7.2 million tonnes and 3.551 million tonnes. Producing 50.711 million tonnes of steel in September this year as against 39.390 million tonnes in September 2008, China is the only Asian country to record a positive growth.

India's production fell marginally by 0.2% at 4.620 million tonnes as compared to 4.630 million tonnes in the corresponding month last year.

Production in Japan and South Korea fell by 18% and 2.4% respectively at 8.270 million tonnes and 4.440 million tonnes during September this year.

Taiwan's production also came down to 1.2 million tonnes, down by 24.9% from 1.598 million tonnes in September last year.
