Around 21,000 Air India employees have decided to stage a two-hour walkout, from 11am to 1pm, on Friday if their June salaries are not credited to their accounts by morning.

“There is no sign of us getting our salaries…so we will stage a walkout across India,” said George Abraham, president of the aviation employees’ guild. Expecting their salary slips on Thursday, the employees were taken aback when they, instead, received a letter from the chairman and managing director Arvind Jadhav, listing the financial difficulties the airline is faced with.

The cash-strapped airline had initially announced payment of the June salaries by July 15, but advanced the date to July 3 after protests by junior employees.

The letter, however, said the airline is “examining” the issue of payment of salaries. There is a “need to understand that the company is in dire financial straits”, the letter said.

When contacted, an Air India spokesperson said the salaries will be deposited by Friday.
