Adani Power’s 3,300 mw thermal power project in Tiroda in Maharashtra may now
receive coal from Korba in Chhattisgarh after the government reportedly cancelled the coal blocks awarded to it at Lohara, also in Maharashtra.

Lohara is about 11 km from the Tadoba Andhari tiger reserve. The awarding of coal blocks led to environmentalists approaching the ministry of environment & forests. After evaluating the issue, the government reportedly deemed the area sensitive and hence cancelled the award.

Sources said the company could now be awarded coal blocks in Korba, one of the coal-rich regions in the country. Company officials could not be reached for comment.

Adani Power plans to commission the first of its five units of 660 mw each in the second quarter of 2011. The initial plan was to have a capacity of 1,980 mw, but last month, the company decided to up the capacity to 3,300 mw, taking the total cost to Rs 14,000 crore.

On Wednesday, the company first told the BSE that it had been awarded a letter of intent (LoI) by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co for the purchase of 1,200 mw on a long term basis. But, later in the day, it issued another statement saying it had not been awarded the LoI but expected the same shortly.

On Tuesday, the company had said it had got an LoI from the Rajasthan Rajya Vidhyut Utpadan Nigam to buy 1,200 mw from its upcoming unit in the state.
