As many as 20 private companies such as Lanco Infratech and HCC have proposed to set up power plants with a total installed capacity of 20,000 MW in Uttar Pradesh.

"The Uttar Pradesh Power Coprporation had invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for installation of thermal power plants in the state, in response to which nearly 20 private companies have submitted their proposals," a senior UPPCL official told PTI.

A majority of these companies have expressed their willingness to set up coal-based plants in the state.

"Some have even proposed to generate around 550 MW power through gas, agro-wate, biomass and industrial waste," the official said.

He said most of the companies have not specified the sites for the plants. Some have proposed to set up the plants in Barabanki, Chitrakoot and Jagdishpur, he added.

The official said UPPCL was examining the proposals after which further action would be taken.

To tackle the power crisis in the state, the government has implemented a new energy policy wherein private companies are encouraged to set up power plants on a MoU basis.

"Under the new policy the UPPCL invited EOI from the interested companies," the offcial said.
