With Chennai airport shut, round trip to Bengaluru crosses Rs 1 lakh

As the Chennai airport remains shut and select flights operate from Arakonnam naval base, air fares across airlines have ballooned out of control. 

As earlier reported by dna, private air carriers have increased the air fare rates manifold.

A round-trip ticket between Delhi to Bangalore, which is the closest major airport to Chennai and is now attracting a heavy influx of air traffic, is garnering Rs 64,000 - Rs 1.20 lakh.

Flight fares from Mumbai to Bengaluru have also gone up to over a lakh. 

At 12:15 hours, a round trip ticket between Mumbai and Bengaluru went as high as Rs 1.20 lakh on MakeMyTrip.com.

A Jet Airways flight from Bengaluru to Mumbai on December 7 has been listed at Rs 62,654.


A Jet Airways flight from New Delhi to Bangalore is priced at Rs 32,190. While a flight from Bangalore to New Delhi by Air India is priced at Rs 41,834 on MakeMyTrip.com. 

However, if you were to book a round trip with a return date two days apart, flight fares start at nearly Rs 16,000 and go up to Rs 95,039. A single Jet Airways flight from Bangalore to New Delhi on December 7 has been starting from Rs 6,601, going up to Rs 86,016.

At 11:42 hours, these were the flight rates listed on the ticket-booking website: 

Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, has said that it would take a couple of days for the Chennai airport to begin functioning. "Commercial flight services cannot start at Chennai airport as of now, we should give it 2 days," he said. He added that once the power supply is restored in the city, commercial flight services would be restarted.

At the same time, IndiGo's chairman Aditya Ghosh has been tweeting about the airlines flights operating from INS Rajali, the Naval airport in Chennai. 

He said that IndiGo will be carrying nearly 130 passengers for Bengaluru and New Delhi from INS Rajali free of cost.
