Wipro down nearly 2% as woman employee files case against company

Shares of Wipro fell nearly 2% on Wednesday following reports that an Indian woman employee at the London office of the IT major has filed a 1 million pounds compensation case of sexual discrimination, unequal pay and unfair dismissal against the firm.

The stock slipped 1.78% to settle at Rs 589.10 on BSE. During the day, it lost 2.4% to Rs 585.35. At NSE, shares of the company dipped 1.75% to Rs 588.85.

According to reports, the woman also claimed that she was paid far less than male staff, earning up to 75,000 pounds per annum rather than the typical 150,000 pounds paid to male equivalents. Wipro, however, refused to comment on the lawsuit.

"Wipro does not comment on its ongoing lawsuits and is committed to the principle of equal employment opportunity and provides all our employees with a work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment of any kind. Wipro is defending these allegations before the court," the IT major said in a statement.

"Following an impartial inquiry, both were relieved from the services of the company after it was established beyond reasonable doubt that they had violated the stated policy," it added.

"Wipro takes serious objection to scurrilous allegations made against the company and will initiate legal action to defend itself against insidious and defamatory allegations," the statement said.
