The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the Reserve Bank of India and the Centre why a separate window was not created to allow people to deposit notes after December 30.
While the Centre and the RBI had said it would not allow the deposit of the now-demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, there was a window for NRIs who had failed to deposit the notes by the deadline. They could do so at RBI designated centres to avoid questioning or inquiries.
However, there was confusion about the window with many assuming that it was open for anyone who had failed to deposit the money by the December 30 deadline.
The SC has asked the Centre and the RBI to file their affidavits in two weeks.
