Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man, loves to fight battles.

The 59-year old business tycoon, who owns one of India’s largest business empires, may have been locked into a fierce fight with the incumbents in the telecom market with his newly-launched Reliance Jio project. But the rugged battler doesn’t look jaded a bit.

In fact, the man, having a net worth of $23.4 billion as per Forbes 2016 report, is all set to take the battle into the enemy camp.

When asked if the mighty Reliance is getting ragged in the process of launching Jio, the man who has shaken up many industrialists earlier, quipped: “We are big boys, we can take it.”

Ambani said he was used to handling ragging even in his years as a student.

On Monday, Ambani began his rare public interaction through the ‘Off The Cuff’ programme organised by noted journalist Shekhar Gupta by saying that Reliance Jio has begun on ‘Stealth’.

It was a part of detailed planning from 2009 when his daughter Esha returned from Yale and told him that the “Internet in our house sucks”.

And mind you, he had all the service providers. It is this gap in the market that Reliance Jio is trying to tap and bridge. Was it then a Rs 1.5-lakh crore ‘punt’ on the telecom business?

He responded by saying, “It’s not a punt” and then added, “It’s not Rs 1.5 lakh crore, it’s Rs 2.5 lakh crore.”

Ambani tries to be humble when he plays down the scale of his ambition.

“Dhirubhai would have said, ‘You are still slow.’ But I am not Dhirubhai and I know my limitations.”

Is Reliance moving away from the oil business?

“We are not running away from any of our businesses. We are only staying away from the businesses where we need to depend on the government to give us revenues like roads and power. Our business is not the old world monopoly,” said the man who is known for his mega scales.
