Unmesh Patil, an architect who resides in Kharghar, took permanent residence in Navi Mumbai only four years ago, but his association with the city goes back to the days when he was a student in Pillai College of Architecture. He completed the architecture course in 2001 and his subsequent work in the field of architecture started in the city after which he was convinced of residing here.

"My initial projects were in Navi Mumbai and as I had an architecture background, it was easy to understand that the city, with its spacious and well-planned look, would be the best option to move in to," said Patil. Patil added that he is happy with his decision, as Navi Mumbai is very unlike Goregaon or Vidyavihar, where he used to reside previously. He added that with the monorail and metro project coming up, the city is witnessing development and availability of facilities well in advance.

Being relatively less populated was another appealing factor for Patil, which cemented his decision to relocate to the city. "Nothing much has changed over the years. Navi Mumbai is still a quiet and a tranquil counterpart of Mumbai. We are not in a race here," he added.

And there is no dearth of facilities, he states. In every area, one has all the basic need. One can always get more with minimum traveling and in less time. He said, "I reside in sector 4, Kharghar and with hospitals, schools and a medical college coming up, all the facilities will be there. Even when it comes to recreation, while Kharghar is yet to match Vashi's development, there are a lot of places to hangout with friends and family." Patil visits the Central Park more often with his wife and daughter.

Efficient road connectivity with the, Mumbai-Bangalore Highway, Thane-Belapur line and the freeway, widens options and people do not have to be dependent on railways alone. While over the years Vashi and Nerul have developed with variety and quality in every area, Patil feels Kharghar will soon be next in line. "Kharghar will surely become an educational and residential hub as there are plenty of schools and institutions, and many more are likely to come up and thrre will be more scope for recreational establishments."

Unlike most, Patil is quite satisfied with the functioning of local governing body. "The only aspect that needs to be sustained in the city is its greenery and open spaces. If development of residential and commecial establishments takes place indiscriminately, Navi Mumbai will lose both," he said.
