Volkswagen emission scandal: NGT wants carmaker to stop selling rigged vehicles in India

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked Volkswagen India to give an undertaking by January 11 that it will not flout emission norms in India. 

Volkswagen Group, caught in the midst of one of the sector's largest scams every, accused of using a "defect" cheat device to trick emission tests. The NGT has asked Volkswagen to give an undertaking by January 11 that it will not sell any vehicle in the country that has the alleged "defect device".

Worldwide, the VW Group admitted that over 6,00,000 cars were affected, including mass market and premium diesel cars from Audi and Porsche. 

In India, the Automobile Research Association of India and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had called for an investigation late last year into the Group's diesel cars available in India, which had later prompted VW India to launch an internal probe to get to the crux of the matter. 

In December, the NGT had appealed to the Centre to ban the sale of Volkswagen vehicles in India, on the back of the scam.
