Vijay Mallya breached SC order; rules need personal appearance: Attorney General

Beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya who has been in the UK since he left India on March 2, breached the Supreme Court order, Attorney General of India Mukul Rohtagi said on Monday. 

Rohtagi was representing Kingfisher Airlines' consortium of 17 banks that filed a contempt plea against Mallya for not fully disclosing his and his family's assets as ordered by the apex court. 

Rohtagi said, that the rules require personal appearance of Vijay Mallya before the Supreme Court. Mallya has breached the order, Zee Business said. 

The next hearing of the case will be held on September 27.

The Supreme Court heard the banks' contempt plea against Mallya after he failed to declare his assets fully, stating that his wife and children weren't bound by the court's orders to declare the assets since they were NRIs. Mallya also declared his assets and properties in a sealed envelope submitted to the Court. 

Mallya has failed to adhere to orders from various agencies seeking his personal appearance for court proceedings and hearings. The Enforcement Directorate issued a non-bailable warrant against Mallya in August after he failed to appear for the proceedings thrice. According to the rules, the ED can push for a non-bailable arrest warrant if the accused fails to appear for the hearings thrice. So far, there are four non-bailable arrest warrants against Mallya.
