Videocon to more than double AC capacity, set up Madurai unit

Videocon, the leading Indian consumer electronics and durables brand, will more than double its annual air conditioner manufacturing capacity from 2.5 lakh to 6 lakh units as it looks to capture 12% market share in the category by December 2015.

Videocon, the leading Indian consumer electronics and durables brand, will more than double its annual air conditioner manufacturing capacity from 2.5 lakh to 6 lakh units as it looks to capture 12% market share in the category by December 2015.

While the company's Aurangabad facility will see capacity addition from 2.5 lakh to 4 lakh units, it will also set up another production facility in Madurai, Tamil Nadu to make 2 lakh units.

Without sharing investment details of the new facility, Akshay Dhoot, head of technology and innovation at Videocon, said the Madurai unit will also make other consumer durables and electronics products including television, refrigerator, air conditioner, mobile phones, etc. "The new facility will be operational in the second half of this year," said Dhoot.

The Indian air conditioner market is currently pegged at Rs 9,000 crore and the value of Videocon's share is around Rs 800 crore. The company is looking to increase its AC sales 2.5 times and plans to expand distribution (selling points) to 9,500 by end of the fiscal from 4,500 now.

The AC category contributes almost 12% to the Rs 8,000 crore revenues of the consumer durables business vertical. The total turnover for Videocon group currently stands at Rs 40,000 crore.

Sanjeev Bakshi, country head-AC, Videocon Industries, said the company has been continuously launching innovative products in the category and will continue to do so in the coming years. "We'd launched the wi-fi AC a few months ago and have already sold over 10,000 units so far. Another innovation that will hit the market in the coming days will be our new range powered by Quantum Edge Technology. These are equipped with T3 compressors that can function in extreme temperatures as high as 55 degrees," he said.

Available in 1.5 tonne split model the Quantum Edge AC range is priced at Rs 37,990 for the three-star variant and Rs 45,490 for the five-star variant. The new range will be targeted in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala and Delhi and sold through both online and offline stores.
