The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has warned individuals using counterfeit identity proofs to get multiple Aadhaar cards, saying that they would have to live with the fake id and name for the rest of their life.

This comes at a time when the UIDAI and the government is facing music for making the Aadhaar card mandatory for services beyond welfare schemes and benefits provided by the government. It includes its requirement for opening bank accounts, for getting driver licences, for filing tax returns. There are also questions being raised about the security of the biometrics data provided to make the Aadhaar card and its possible misuse.

According to a report by The Times of India, there are several people trying to use different identities to get several Aadhaar cards so that they can get more benefits from welfare schemes.

However, UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey was quoted by the report as saying, "People should not even attempt to enrol twice. They will be caught very easily. They are unaware that they have given their biometrics. The punishment is also very serious."

UIDAI says if a person has used two fake ids, it may give him two enrolment numbers. But after the checks and balances, it would be easy to tell that the same biometrics were provided by someone posing as two different individuals.

According to this procedure, only one Aadhaar card number can be generated for a particular set of unique biometrics. If the same biometrics come to the fore again, it would be rejected. Or worse, an Aadhaar number could be provided to the fake name provided. In such a case, the person may have to live with the fake name for the rest of his/ her life. According to the report, once an Aadhaar number is generated for a name (identity), it can never be changed.

The individual - now with the fake name - will also have to change his name on his bank documents, PAN card, voter ID, and school certificates, the report said. Apart from that "he will also face the law for giving biometrics at two enrolment centres using forged documents and may face a three-year jail term as per the Aadhaar Act as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) would have filed an FIR against him," the report said.
