Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was speaking at his second pre-budget consultative meet.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while holding the second pre-budget meeting in New Delhi on Saturday, said that the government was focused on taking the benefits of social security schemes to the unorganised sector.
At the Pre-Budget Consultative Meeting, attended by representatives of Trade Unions, and several other ministers, Jaitley said, "making social security schemes accessible to the workers of the unorganised sector is a major challenge, which the government is keen to address at this juncture as the unorganised sector is growing at a faster pace."
He said that "one of the major priorities of the present government is to ensure that benefits of social security schemes reach to every section of workers, including those working in the unorganised sector."
The trickle-down of social security schemes to the unorganised sector's workers was also a part of the suggestions that the trade union representatives made, as a part of a joint memorandum to the Finance Miniser. "The (upcoming) Budget should focus more on social security schemes for the workers in the unorganised sector."
Other suggestions include recommendations for better job creation, higher minimum wage, contractual workers' wages, anti-dumping measures, and so on.
The meeting was also attended by Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal, Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa, Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, Financial Services Secretary Anjuli Chib Duggal, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, and so on.
"The government is sensitive about the workers' welfare and would take all possible measures to ensure that their interest and welfare is fully protected," he added.
