World War II-era bikemaker UM Motorcyles expands reach in India

The company will be competing with Royal Field in the Indian market, its officials said.

The US-based UM Motorcycles-Lohia (UML), which takes its design inspiration from the World War II era motorcycles, has widened its dealership network in India, by opening its fifth store in Mumbai.

The company will be competing with Royal Field in the Indian market, its officials said.

A joint venture between UM International and Indian partner UM Lohia Two-wheelers Pvt Ltd, UML has invested over Rs 100 crore in the project so far . Renegade Commando and Renegade Sports S are the two models which have been launched at present at a price tag of Rs 1.61 lakh and Rs 1.51 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the company said in a statement.

The dealership at Borivali along the Western Express Highway is company's fifth such store in India. A dealership store has already come up at Godhbunder area of Thane while two more are to come up by next month in Andheri and Vashi.

"For a city which is always on the move, UM Motorcycles will provide the bike lovers of Mumbai another dose of world-class mobility solution. This new dealership in Borivali will allow us to meet the demands of our rapidly growing customers and will set a new benchmark for service and support, making buying and owning a UM Motorcycle a truly enjoyable experience. The new UM Motorcycle dealership will provide the prospective customers of UM Motorcycles a venue to know our products up close and personal." said Rajeev Mishra, director, UML.

According to the company, Renegade Commando is a low-slung cruiser powered by a high powered 280 cc Engine with 25 BHP at 8,500 rpm and 21.8 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm, mated to a six-speed transmission. This lightweight machine has a 200 mm ground clearance and an inbuilt USB charging point.

Similarly, the Renegade Sports S model will also share the same engine as the Renegade Commando. These motorcycles have a fuel tank of 18 liters comes with mileage of 32-35 km.

Mishra told dna that the company will be launching two more models by the end of this year or early next year. "Since its launch, we have received close to 4000 order from across the country including 400 from Mumbai and adjoining regions," added Mishra.

The motorcycles manufacturing takes place at Lohia Autos Kashipur facility in Uttarakhand.
