It was a narrow escape for 247 flyers when two Jet Airways planes collided while taxiing to the runway for departure at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Sunday afternoon. This is the fourth such incident reported from the Delhi airport in the past six months, where passengers had a close shave.

Senior management told DNA that one of the aircraft's wing hit the other plane from behind, bringing the plane to a sudden halt with a jerk, triggering panic among the passengers of both the flights. Both sets of crew have been de-rostered pending investigation, officials said.

The incident took place around 1.59 pm when a Jet Airways flights 9W 603 from Delhi to Srinagar and 9W 730 from Delhi – Patna, we're taxiing towards runway 11-29.

"Initial probe has revealed that the flight to Srinagar was following the Patna bound flight. Bother flight turned in different directions when the flight to Srinagar dangerously neared the plane in front and while turning right, its right wing rammed into the tail of the Patna boumd flight. Both aircraft's came to a halt and emergency situation prevailed for about half an hour," said an officer from the Delhi Air Traffic Control.

The officer said that the preliminary inquiry report is being submitted and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation will probe into the matter further. While one aircraft had 129 passengers on board, the other had 118 passengers.

The airline, in a statement said, all guests and crew on board of both aircraft are safe and are being taken to the terminal for re-accommodation in subsequent flights.

"The aircraft are currently being inspected by the Jet Airways engineering team. The airline has reported the event to the regulatory authorities. An updated statement will follow, as more details become available," a spokesperson said.
