Tired of flight delays? See which airline you should be flying instead

According to the data, IndiGo Airlines remained at the top of the charts with lowest flight cancellations at a mere 0.10% and the domestic operations of state-owned Air India at 1.40%. SpiceJet, which came out with cheap ticket offers with a dime a dozen had the second highest cancellation rate of 1.22% (see chart).

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data has shown that for the month of June, flight cancellations were at 0.67% only due to clear weather and favourable flight conditions. However, if you werer part of that small percentage and really wanted to make that journey you missed or got delayed, this is what you should have done: 

According to the data, IndiGo Airlines remained at the top of the charts with lowest flight cancellations at a mere 0.10% and the domestic operations of state-owned Air India at 1.40%. SpiceJet, which came out with cheap ticket offers with a dime a dozen had the second highest cancellation rate of 1.22% (see chart). 

The data indicates that airlines in India cancelled nearly 21.5% of flights because of weather conditions but technical faults grounded over 24% flights. 

 

The passenger growth in the month of June 2015 grew by 20%, at 388.33 lakh but the passenger load factor (PLF) went down as the tourist season came to an end. 

Vistara

Even though Tata Group and Singapore Airline's joint venture Vistara had the second highest on-time performance of 95.6%, its PLF dropped significantly from 71.1% in May to 59.3% in June. 

The airline was, however, able to more than double its market share to 1.3% in the second quarter as against 0.5% in January to March period. 

Out of the total 819 complaints received against airlines in June, Vistara registered the lowest number at just 1 complaint per 10,000 passengers carried in the month. 

Jet Airways + JetLite

Naresh Goyal-led Jet Airways and its low cost arm -- JetLite registered an on-time performance of 78.6% with its Mumbai operations recording lowest performance at 72.4% and Bangalore highest at 87.7%. 

The two airlines combined denied boarding to 139 passengers and cancelled flights that affected nearly 2,100 passengers in the given month coughing up Rs 3.61 lakh and Rs 3.07 lakh in refunds and compensation, respectively. 

The PLF of Jet Airways and JetLite fell in June to 77.7% and 78.1% from 81.1% amd 79.4% in May, respectively. 

The two also performed badly on their market share data. Jet Airways registered a drop to 18.7% in the second quarter from 20% in the first with Jet Lite's share dropping to 3.2% from 4.6%. 

The two airlines combined also got the highest number of passenger complaints, at 194 from the total of 819. 

Air India

The beleaguered airline that survives on public money had a market share of 15.8% in June 2015, lower than Jet Airways and IndiGo (38.4%).  

The Airline also paid out the highest amount of Rs 12.89 lakh to 213 passengers it denied boarding and Rs 18.76 lakh to over 3700 passengers it cancelled flights for. The Airline also paid out a whopping Rs 40.6 lakh to passengers whose flights were delayed beyond 2 hours. 

Its PLF, too, dropped to 73.5% from 80.4% in May. 

The on-time performance of Air India's domestic operations, too, remained second worse to SpiceJet at 75.7%. 


SpiceJet

Operations difficulties continue to harm Ajay Singh-led Spicejet even as the Airline tries to claw back market-share with innovative and aggressive ticket sales campaigns. 

The Airline registered passenger complaints of 2 per 10,000 as against the month's average of 1.2. 

It cancellation rate stood at 1.22%, second highest in the month after Air India. 

On-time performance of Spicejet was lowest at 60.2% with over half of its passengers boarding from Mumbai missing the scheduled departure time. 

The Airline's best performance came in from Hyderabad where its flights took off on advertised time 71.4% of the time. 

However, the Airline managed to surpass all other airlines in growth of its PLF for the month of June with 93.2%, slight increase from 93.1% in May as against 80% in January this year. 

IndiGo

The Airline registered  a PLF of 86.6% in June as against 91.9% in May. 

Its cancellations were lowest at just 0.10% and only 0.7 passengers per 10,000 complaining against its operations in the given month. 

IndiGo's on-time performance stood at 82.6% with passengers in Bengaluru able to fly on-time 90% of the times and Mumbai passengers at under 70%. 

The Airline did not deny or cancel on any passenger but gave refreshments to over 8800 passengers whose flights were delayed by over 2 hours. 

Go Air

The Wadia-family run Go Air dropped PLF and cancelled flights for 93 passengers. 

1333 passengers were affected by flight delays of over 2 hours in the month of June 2015.

Go Air's on-time performance was low at 68% at Mumbai airport and highest at 84% in Delhi. Its average performance of flying on time at 76.8%. 


Overall for the sector, the month of June saw 20% increase in the number of flyers despite the passenger load factor dropping because of the end of tourist season. 

'Flight problems' remained the top of the charts on passengers complaints at 31.5% followed by customer service and baggage issues at 24.8% and 22.3%, respectively.
