When BMW launched the first generation of the X5 in 1999, it opened up a whole new era of SUVs
from marques that were traditionally known for their luxury sedans. Since then, the segment has seen tremendous growth and with it, the X5 has faced fierce competition as well. In this growing melee of a market, the BMW X5 has managed to carve itself a niche as an urban SUV with decent off-road capabilities and with the third generation of the car that is bound for Indian shores soon, it aims to take its image a step further.

The third generation of the BMW X5 is a complete redesign that not only builds on the previous generation’s lines but also quite capably incorporates the current face of the Bavarian automaker.
Headlights that stretch to the very large kidney grille first seen on the current 3 Series form the basis of this makeover and while styling is purely a subjective affair, the new X5 takes a little getting used to. Great emphasis has been put into making the car aerodynamically efficient as well, which shows off a very clear effort to optimise environmental effectiveness not just from the engine but from the body as well. Space all round has been improved upon as well – with the new car bringing in a roomier interior not just in terms of actual dimensions, but in terms of its visual impact as well. Individualisation is the key word and owners will be able to choose between the Design Pure Experience, Design Pure Excellence and M Sport package with a mind-numbing range of combinations for the interiors as well as exteriors.

While the new BMW X5 sports a host of engine options ranging from the 4.5-litre V8 petrol xDrive50i to the performance packed M50d, the engine that most buyers in India should be interested in will be the 3-litre xDrive30d. This oil-burner will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard put down over 250 horsepower and 560Nm of torque and offer a claimed fuel efficiency of 16kmpl. Apart from that, the BMW X5 will come loaded with features such as the ECO PRO mode, optional suspension packages, intelligent all-wheel drive with optional Dynamic Performance Control, Lane Departure Warning, collision warning systems, Active Cruise Control, Adaptive LED Headlights, Head-Up display and a Parking Assistant with the Surround View system, among many others.

Expect the new BMW X5 to be launched in India shortly with a price tag slightly northward of its current generation model.
