TCS chief N Chandrasekaran was appointed Tata Sons' new Chairman on Thursday. The 53-year-old TCS MD and CEO replaces Cyrus Mistry, who was removed as the chairman of US $103 billion Tata conglomerate in October. While, Rajesh Gopinathan has been appointed as the next CEO of TCS.
The decision to promote Chandrasekaran to Tata Sons's top job was announced in the board meeting at the group's headquarters Bombay House, which was scheduled to begin at 5 PM on Thursday. A five-member selection committee had zeroed in his selection. The committee consisted of interim Chairman Ratan Tata, TVS Group Chairman Venu Srinivasan, Bain Capital's Amit Chandra, Ronen Sen and Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, they had held several meetings in recent weeks to zero in on a new pick.
Ratan Tata has been serving as interim Chairman since the Tata Group removed Cyrus Mistry on October 24.
According to sources, the Tata Sons Board may create a new position of Vice-Chairman and expand the top deck. Tata Sons had earlier set a February deadline to finalise a Chairman for holding Tata Sons.
Earlier in the day, Q3 results of TCS were announced, wherein the IT giant reported a net profit of Rs 6778 crore, beating the Street's estimates.
Chandrasekaran had joined TCS in 1987 after completing a Masters in Computer Applications from the Regional Engineering College, Trichy in Tamil Nadu.
