Tax department refunds Rs 1,500 crore to assessees with small claims: Jayant Sinha

With a view to provide relief to small tax payers, CBDT had directed the central processing cell, Bengaluru to issue refunds up to Rs 5,000

Tax department has issued Rs 1,502 crore in refunds to 78 lakh assessees in the current fiscal so far, whose claims were less than Rs 5,000, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

"During the current financial year, refunds up to Rs 5,000 have already been issued in 77.76 lakh cases amounting to a total of Rs 1,502 crore," Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

He said, as of March 9, refunds of up to Rs 5,000 in 8.20 lakh cases are pending for various assessment years involving a total amount of Rs 160 crore.

With a view to provide relief to small tax payers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had directed the central processing cell, Bengaluru to issue refunds up to Rs 5,000 and refunds in cases where outstanding arrears are up to Rs 5,000 without any adjustment.

"Refunds are pending for various statutory and administrative reasons. While all efforts are being made to clear the backlog of refunds, especially of small amounts, no specific time frame in this regard has been fixed," Sinha added.
