Mumbai Metro Rail Corp is expected to complete the bidding process and select companies by May
Siemens, Tata Projects, Larsen & Toubro, Alstom and Bombardier are among companies keen to bid for different packages of the Rs 23,136 crore, 33.5-km long underground Colaba-Bandra-Seepz metro line project undertaken by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).
MMRC is expected to complete the bidding process and select companies by May.
The packages include traction system, power supply, tunnel ventilation, signalling, train control, platform screen doors and telecommunication system, and will involve manufacturing, supply and installation of various systems.
This metro line will snake through six business districts of Mumbai – Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Bandra Kurla Complex, MIDC, Worli and Seepz and have 27 metro stations.
Siemens Ltd (India) has tied up with its German counterpart Siemens AG; similarly, Alstom Transport India is in the fray with Alstom Transport SA. The other two bidders are Larsen & Toubro-Furrer-Frey consortium and Cobra Instalaciones Y Servicios SA for traction system or overhead equipment.
The other package is for power supply system for which four bids have come in the companies including Tata Projects, Isolux Ingenieria SA, Larsen & Toubro Ltd and consortium of Siemens Ltd (India)-Siemens AG (Germany).
Consortia of Blue Star-C Doctor, Sterling & Wilson-GYT and Voltas-STEC apart from Isolux Ingenieria SA and ETA Engineering Private Ltd are in the fray for tunnel ventilation and environmental control system.
A total of five consortia – Alstom Transport India Limited-Alstom Transport SA, Nippon Signal Company-Singapore Technologies Electronics, Ansaldo STS-Autometers Alliance -Chongqing Chuanyi Automation Company, Siemens Ltd (India)-Siemens Rail Automation SAU (Spain) and Bombardier-ZTE Corporation are in the ring for signalling, train control, platform screen doors and telecommunication systems.
With pre-qualification of technical bids underway, the financial bids post evaluation for traction system is scheduled for opening on April 21. Similarly, financial tenders of the four companies in the fray for power supply system will be opened on April 18. On May 8 one of the five companies in the fray for tunnel ventilation and environmental control system will be selected.
For signalling, train control, platform screen doors and telecommunication systems, a final date for the opening of tenders and selection of one of the five companies is yet to be decided. At the moment, the bid documents have been submitted to the project funding agency – Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
JICA is financing 57.2% of the total project cost of Rs 23,136 crore, which comes to Rs 13,235 crore. Already there has been a hike in the civil construction cost of the metro rail project. However, MMRC officials are optimistic and anticipate that the quotations for the various systems, for which bidding process is underway, will be in their favour and will help in reducing the overall project cost.
"Tenders are yet to be submitted for some other systems like automatic fare collection, escalators, lifts and most importantly rolling stock or trains. Pre-qualification bids of these packages will be submitted between March 20 and 29," said an MMRC official.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra state government has received three bids from Reliance Infrastructure, L&T and Afcons Infrastructure to design and construct Shivaji Memorial off Mumbai's coast in the Arabian Sea.
The estimated Rs 3,600 crore worth project will be world's tallest statue. It will have exhibition halls, museums, viewing decks and food court. At present, evaluation of bids is underway.
