Sensex and Nifty tumble 3% at day's closing

The benchmark BSE Sensex tumbled 854.86 points to close at 26,987.46 and the NSE Nifty closed 251.05 points down, at 8127.35, on heavy selling by funds and investors amid global sell-off on worries about Eurozone and sinking oil prices.

Even as the trade unions began their 5-day strike against Government of India's share-sale in Coal India, the company was the only one apart from Hindustan Unilever to post gains on the National Stock Exchange. Hindustan Unilever and Coal India closed up by 1.54% and 0.07%, respectively. 

The highest losers on the Nifty were Jindal Steel (7.03%), ONGC (6.06%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd (5.32%), Tata Steel (5.11%) and HDFC (5.05%). 

On the Bombay Stock Exchange, the highest gainers were GSPL Ltd, Jubliant Life Sciences Ltd and Castrol India with 3.89%, 3.69% and 1.95% gains, respectively. 

The top losers on the BSE Sense were Indiabulls Real Estate LTd, DHFC Ltd, Hindustan Construction Ltd, Arvind Ltd and HDIL, all shedding over 6% of their value.
