Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a success but Bollywood collections remain lower than last year

Salman Khan's Eid release Bajrangi Bhaijaan may have had a smashing opening, garnering Rs 27.25 crore on the opening day, and a whooping Rs 102.60 crore on the opening weekend, but it has, so far, failed to top his last year's superhit that garnered Rs 233 crore. Bajrangi Bhaijaan, at the time of writing, had garnered Rs 151.05 crore.

When Kick released on July 25 last year, it had collected Rs 26 crore on the opening day, and Rs 83.50 crore on the opening weekend. Over its lifetime, the movie collected Rs 233 crore for its creators, making it a resounding success, topped only by PK, albeit with a huge margin – PK had garnered Rs 339.50 crore.

Bollywood has collected Rs 1,239.77 crore in revenue in the first six months of 2015, down 17.9% from the total revenue collected in the same period last year. In 2014, new releases in the first six months had gathered Rs 1,508.58 crore.

However, it would be unfair to state these numbers without mentioning that 2014 saw 49 new movie releases in the period, as compared to the 33 movies that have released in the first six months of 2015.

Crucial Rs 100 crore mark

Last year, five films crossed the crucial Rs 100 crore mark in the first six months of the year, lead by Salman Khan's Kick (Rs 233 crore), while only three films have crossed the Rs 100 crore mark so far this year, lead by Tanu Weds Manu Returns (Rs 152 crore).

In the entire year (2014), nine films had crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, with the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Happy New Year being the other blockbuster to cross the Rs 200 crore mark in the year.
