Reliance Communications (RCom) on Monday announced that Vinod Sawhny, a former Bharti Airtel Board member, will be its new CEO.
It also constituted an all-new board and gave additional responsibilities to serving top executives.
Gurdeep Singh, CEO, wireless business, will also function as CEO, consumer business comprising wireless, DTH and consumer broadband, representing over 70% of RCom's revenues and operating profits.
Punit Garg will continue as CEO of Indian Enterprise and IDC business, while Bill Barney, who was recently appointed, will continue as CEO of Reliance Globalcom, comprising Flag Telecom, Vanco and Yipes.
The new RCom board will comprise Sawhny, Gurdeep Singh, Garg, Bill Barney, Suresh Rangachar (president, IT and services), Manikantan Iyer (CFO) and Amit Das (president, HR).
RCom's management rejig follows a similar exercise by Bharti Airtel. Sawhny worked with the Bharti group for ten years in various roles spanning telecom, retail and consumer durables.
Other notable ex-Airtel employees hired by RCom include Shamik Das, current RCom COO, Deepak Khanna, former CEO of RCom's enterprise business, and Syed Safawi, ex-RCom CEO of wireless business.
In recent months, RCom has undergone several management changes. Barney replaced Garg as CEO of the global business, while Garg replaced Khanna at RCom's enterprise business. Similarly, CFO Manikantan Iyer replaced Abhishek Rajgarhia and Amit Das replaced Rajan Dutta as HR head.
RCom reported disappointing October-December results recently, after several quarters of beating Street expectations. However, RCom's data revenues, led by 3G, continue to be industry-leading. This is expected to be a focus for the company, going forward, along with its enterprise and global business, which is also reporting steady growth.
