Regular container train service to Cochin Port commences from Coimbatore

The train will leave Irugur on Saturdays and return from Cochin on Thursdays and are scheduled to connect the direct shipping services to Far East, China, Europe and the Middle East leaving Cochin on Mondays and Tuesdays.

A regular container service to International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT), Vallarpadam, Cochin Port Trust (CPT) commenced from the Irugur Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Coimbatore. The first train was flagged off by CPT Deputy Chairman, G Senthilvel at a function on Saturday evening.

The train will leave Irugur on Saturdays and return from Cochin on Thursdays and are scheduled to connect the direct shipping services to Far East, China, Europe and the Middle East leaving Cochin on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The import containers from these mainline ships can be moved to Coimbatore by the Thursday return service and by availing this service, exports to Europe will save seven days by avoiding Colombo transhipment, an official release said.

CPT and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the running of this regular service, which will be of great advantage to the Export-Import (EXIM) community in-and-around Coimbatore district.

CONCOR will provide storage space at very attractive terms and conditions to shipping lines who desires to stack the empty containers at Coimbatore. Top officials of CPT, CONCOR, ICD Irugur, customs department and Steamer Agents Association and representatives of trade were present at the function.
