A prisoner of Nashik Central Jail committed suicide by hanging himself from a toilet window on Monday.
According to Nashik Road police, Pralhad Rokade, 27, was sentenced to judicial custody in a case that is under trial. He had been charging with raping a minor.
On December 21 last year, Dindori police had arrested Rokade and Gopinath Vasal, both residents of Avankhed in Dindori tehsil, Nashik, for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl of the same village. When the two were presented in court, their bail plea was rejected and they were remanded to judicial custody on December 29 under sections 376 and 506 of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
At around 3 am on Monday, Rokade, who was held in circle number 2, barrack number 5, went to the toilet and hanged himself with a rope he had made out of a torn bed sheet, said Narayan Nyahalde, inspector of Nashik Road police station, where a case of accidental death has been registered.
Rokade was found hanging by other jail inmates who informed the authorities. The doctor who examined him declared him dead. Nashik Road police did the panchnama and sent the body for post-mortem.
On April 30 last year, another prisoner of this jail, Meva Jebra Zavre, 32, had committed suicide in the bathroom by making a rope from a nylon scrubber and hung himself from a hook. With such incidents becoming more frequent, the Central Jail authorities have in the past stated that they were considering installing close circuit cameras within the premises, but it has not been done yet. Presently, home guards have been deployed at the jail to make up for the shortage of police personnel.
