Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday dismissed reports that extremist elements were behind the recent successful tea plantation women workers stir in Munnar.

In a release on the eve of the talks to be held here on the demand, including 20 per cent bonus and wage revision of plantation workers with the representatives of Plantation Management and workers here, Chandy said there was no truth in reports that extremists were behind the stir.

However, he said the much talked about plantation sector in Kerala was passing through crisis. "There is a need for a comprehensive study and analysis of the issues connected with the plantation sector," Chandy said.

"It is time for change in the attitude of plantation owners, trade unions and also centre-states towards this sector," the chief minister added.

He said a solution to the issues of workers should be found through collective efforts of all concerned.

"My opinion is that maximum wages which the plantation industry can afford should be given to workers," he said, adding, "if it goes beyond that level, plantation would be forced to close down."

"The best option is to extend maximum benefits to workers and at the same time the plantation sector should also function," he said.

Chandy charged that CPI-M-led LDF Opposition was trying to derive political benefit out of the present crisis in the plantation sector.

"Government has an open look on the talks tomorrow and expect that all concerned would work towards with an open mind to find a solution to the crisis," he said.

A copy of the release was made available to the media.
