Tata Steel is introducing a new value-added product – ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) – for the construction industry.

The offering is a sustainable material that increases compressive strength and durability of concrete and significantly reduces carbon footprint, the company said.

Tata Steel expects to start trial supplies of the new offering in a month’s time and launch it in three months.

“This product will be introduced in other major eastern cities like Kolkata, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar,” the company said.

The products are being tested in Jamshedpur by an external agency and will be produced at Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur works after ascertaining its market response.

GGBS, the company said, is blended with ordinary portland cement in ratio ranging from 30:70 to 70:30 to make ready-mix concrete.
