As part of government plans to augment infrastructure in the North-Eastern states, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari during his visit to Guwahati next week would review challenges the highway and road sector is facing in the region.

The Union Shipping and Roads Transport Minister will inaugurate a two-day conference on June 30 on challenges facing the infrastructure and transport sector in the region.

"Gadkari will inaugurate a conference on 'Key challenges in Highways & Infrastructure Construction in the North-Eastern Region and Use of Innovative Technologies and Materials' in Guwahati on June 30," an official statement said on Friday.

"The two-day conference will be attended by the chief ministers, PWD ministers and other key officials from various North-East states," it said.

The main objective of the event will be to build the capacity of local contractors, engineers and other stakeholders for participation in construction of highways and infrastructure in the region, the statement said.

The involvement of local stakeholders in construction of highways and infrastructure would result in inclusive development of the region by providing new employment opportunities and avenues, it added.

The event will also witness discussions on various process and procedure reforms to remove obstacles to spur infrastructure development and promote 'ease of doing business'.

Besides, it will also focus challenges in construction of bridge and tunnel and address various road safety and environmental issues with special focus on slope stabilisation and environmental friendly slope protection techniques.

The event is being organised by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways through its undertaking, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL).

An exhibition would also be held on the occasion to showcase various innovative and appropriate technologies that can be used to enhance pace of highways and infrastructure construction.
