On Thursday night, Nestle India has decided to withdraw Maggi off the shelves.

The company issued a press release reaffirming their faith that Maggi is completely safe. But according to Nestle India, recent developments and 'unfounded concerns' about the product have led to an 'environment of confusion for the consumer'. The company said since trust of consumers and the safety of their products is the first priority, they have decided to withdraw Maggi. But Nestle believes that Maggi Noodles will be soon back in the market as soon as the 'current situation is clarified'.

Nestle India's decision may have been precipitated by the fact that five states in India had already temporarily banned Maggi till Thursday night.

After Delhi, four more states -- Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand-- on Thursday banned the sale of Maggi noodles after concerns were raised over presence of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead beyond permissible levels in the product.

The Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand governments banned the sale of Nestle's instant noodles for three months while in Gujarat the ban will be effective for one month after some samples of the food had failed lab tests, officials said in Chennai, Dehradun and Gandhinagar.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the state government banned the sale for one month till the receipt of reports over the fitness of the fast food for human consumption. The four states also ordered the noodle manufacturers Nestle India to immediately withdraw the stocks. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are awaiting results of tests of samples of the noodles taken from the respective states before taking any action. Delhi had yesterday banned sale of the food item for 15 days.

The Union government though has so far taken a wait and watch policy. Union Health Minister JP Nadda sad that the Centre will take appropriate action once the test reports of Maggi samples are received from the states.

"The centre had asked the states to take samples of Maggi and send the report by June 1. But as testing of samples takes time, reports from many states have not come yet. We hope to get the reports by this evening and may take appropriate action on the basis of reports," he said.

On Thursday,  Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta were slapped with notices by the Tamil Nadu consumer forum on a petition seeking a direction to them not to promote Maggi noodles on "false representations" about quality and safety.

The Madurai bench of the Tamil Nadu State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission also issued notices to CMD of Nestle India, the makers of Maggi, and three others, including state Commissioner of Food Safety besides directing officials to take samples of the product for tests.
