Nestle India has been on fire-fighting mode ever since the controversy over its 2-minute Maggi noodles hit the headlines. Several states in the country have banned the food item from the market after samples were found to have more than the permissible amount of lead in it.

According to media reports, in an attempt to do some damage control, Nestle India is looking to tie up with US-based public relations firm APCO Worldwide. There are also reports that Nestle will bring back Shivani Hegde to India, who heads the company's operations in Sri Lanka.

Maggi noodles came under the scanner after the quantity of lead and MSG was found to be more than permissible limits in samples in Uttar Pradesh. Other states quickly followed suit, and even went on to ban the product from the market.

While Nestle CEO Paul Bulcke said, “We do not add MSG as an additive to our product. If it is found, it is because of the natural Indian environment," the company recalled batches of Maggi noodles from the market and pulled it off the shelves in several states in the country.

Uttar Pradesh was the first state to ban Maggi. It was followed by four other states - Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana. Delhi has banned the product for a month.

The Maharashtra government that had given a clean chit to Maggi on Friday, went on to ban the product the next day. Reliance also temporarily withdrew 11 brands of instant noodles from its stores across India, saying they had done this keeping in mind the safety and health of its customers.

The controversy also created some ripples overseas, with Singapore and Nepal also banning the product.

Meanwhile, Nestle CEP Paul Bulcke said he was hopeful that Maggi would be back in the markets as early as possible.
