'Necessary to link agriculture to skill development schemes'

Provision of Rs 190 crore has been made for all 27 livelihood colleges in state. The state government is working in coordination with private and public sector undertakings, and their CSR funds are also being utilized for training the youth.

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal on Sunday convened meeting of Niti Aayog sub-committee on skill development here at Mantralaya 'Mahanadi Bhavan' where he stressed on importance of linking agriculture and other related sectors with skill development schemes.

"It is necessary to link agriculture and other related sectors with skill development schemes. Youth of rural areas should be given the facility of skill development," Chief Minister Badal, who is also the coordinator of NITI Ayog's sub-group of Chief Ministers said.

He further said that MNREGA labourers should also be included under skill development programmes.

Display stalls should be set up in all the states to exhibit products manufactured by skilled youth under skill development programmes, he added.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and his Gujarat counterpart Anandiben Patel were present on the occasion.

"Chhattisgarh is the first state in the country to have provided right to skill development to youths. Livelihood Colleges have been opened in all 27 districts of the state while now the scheme is being expanded to block-level," Raman Singh said.

Singh also requested for Centre's aid to further promote the scheme citing requirement of nearly Rs 250 to 300 crores on skill development of youths in the state.

He also suggested that other states should follow Chhattisgarh and enact similar laws to empower youth with skilled development right.

Meanwhile, Gujrat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel also informed about the steps being taken in her state for skill development and advised that skilled youth should be associated to formal education.

Food and Civil Supply Minister of Odisha Sanjay Kumar Das Burma, Technical Education Secretary of Goa Virendra Kumar, Principal Secretary of Meghalaya M S Rao, Skill Development Secretary of Tamil Nadu C Samayamoorthy and Additional Secretary of NITI Aayog Alok Kumar too made their suggestions.

Subsequently, Prakash Singh Badal and Anandiben Patel visited a livelihood college in state's Durg district along with Raman Singh.
