Just weeks after opening its maiden tourism pavilion on Infosys campus in Hingewadi, Pune, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (MTDC) claims that it has turned out a profitable venture.

Drawing a daily footfall of around 400 people, the state-owned corporation expects to recover their investment in the next two months.

MTDC, with an aim to tap into big private sector firm, had inaugurated the 1,250 square feet pavilion at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park (RGIP) on 29th May to lure around 40,000 IT employees who work in the campus.

The corporation, which is targeting young professionals who are more likely to travel and have high spending power, now plans to open a similar pavilion in other corporate hubs including Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Seepz in Mumbai and Millenium Business Park in Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

Discussing the profitability of the venture, Satish Soni, joint managing director, MTDC, says, "After observing the response from next three months, we plan to open such more Tourism Pavilions in the next financial year. We have also targeted places like Bandra-Kurla Complex, Seepz in Mumbai, Millenium Business Park in Vashi, apart from cities like Indore, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, Ahmedabad, Surat in Gujarat, and Bangalore in Karnataka in our next development phase."

Valsa Nair Singh, principal secretary, Cultural and Tourism Affairs, Government of Maharashtra says, "The response is tremendous and we are taking every right step to build it further."

The development comes on the backdrop of 6% growth anticipated by the state tourism department for the fiscal year 2017. According to a state-government estimate, around 20 crore travellers visited the state during the financial year 2015-16, out of which around 80% were domestic travellers while the rest were foreigners.

The officials said that the pavilion at Infosys organises 1-2 days of short trips during the weekends as well as long vacations apart from other services offered by MTDC, on a concessional basis.

The employees will also be offered special heritage tours, souvenir shops, air tickets, train tickets, passport and visa facilities, adventure tours, all kinds of travel kits, a travel lounge area, unique selfie point and an experience to wear various Maharashtrian traditional costumes.
