Motown began the new fiscal on a strong note posting double-digit growth in domestic passenger vehicles sales on the back new launches and compact cars in April.

Maruti Suzuki India has posted its best-ever total monthly sales at 151,215 units in April 2017, driven by compact cars and utility vehicles (UVs).

The country's largest carmaker sold 144,081 units of passenger vehicles in the domestic market in April 2017, up 23.1% from the year-ago period and exported 6,723 units. It also sold 411 units of its light commercial vehicle Super Carry.

Compact car segment comprising Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, Dzire, Dzire Tour, with sales of 63,584 units, registered highest year-on-year growth at 39.1%.

UVs was another segment that saw good growth at 28.6%. Total sales of UVs Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza stood at 20,638 units.

Other car makers including Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors and Honda Cars India also saw growth in domestic passenger vehicle sales.

Hyundai Motor India, India's second-largest car manufacturer and the largest passenger car exporter, registered a 5.7% increase in domestic sales at 44,758 units and exported 11,610 units in April 2017.

Rakesh Srivastava, director - sales and marketing, HMIL, said, "Hyundai continued its growth momentum on a strong base of last year driven by a tremendous response for the family sedan Xcent and continued strong performance of volume-driving aspirational brands Grand i10, Elite i20 and Creta."

Tata Motors sold 12,827 units of passenger vehicles in India, a growth of 23% over April 2016 due to its recently-launched lifestyle UV Tata Hexa and Tigor. However, its total sales (including exports) saw a degrowth of 21% and total domestic sales were lower by 19% as commercial vehicle sales fell 36% to 16,017 units due to the ban on the sale of BS-III vehicles.

Honda Cars India also reported strong double-digit growth, posting a 38.1% jump in domestic sales at 14,480 units in April. It sold 438 units of small car Brio, 2,061 units of premium hatchback Jazz, 2,029 units of compact sedan Amaze and 5,948 units of mid-sized sedan City.

The company sold 3,266 units of its new compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) WR-V. Besides, SUV BR-V saw sales of 701 units. The sales for SUV CR-V stood at 36 units and Accord Hybrid 1 unit last month.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reported a 51.81% jump in its domestic sales at 12,948 units, driven by its newly-launched SUV Fortuner.

Nissan Motor India's wholesale deliveries surged 39% to 4,217 vehicles on account of demand for Datsun redi-GO and the recently-introduced Nissan Terrano.

The numbers show that the impact of note ban is fading and the new fiscal has started on a positive note.

Abdul Majeed, partner - Price Waterhouse and an auto expert, said in a press release, "The automotive industry is getting back to the growth trajectory, overall environment currently support the automotive industry growth this year. The economy is expected do well, and impact of demonetization is wearing off, with good monsoon predicted, the rural economy will a lot better compared to last year. GST implementation may have a short impact on inflation but good growth in the economy and better monsoon will offset the impact."
