Car sales zoom in September; Maruti way ahead of competition

Expect General Motors and Honda Cars, all carmakers posted a growth in their domestic sales figures in September.

While all but two carmakers posted healthy growth figures for passenger car sales for the month of September, homegrown Maruti Suzuki zoomed past its competition in the domestic automobile market, with 30% growth in its sales, the carmaker's highest ever figures. 

Most carmakers -- barring luxury automobile companies -- reveal their sales figures in the first three days of every month. 

Majority automobile companies posted single digit growth figures for passenger cars ahead of the festive season which starts in September and goes on till the end of Diwali. This included, Ford India (9% domestic sales growth), Tata Motors (24% growth), Toyota Kirloskar Motors (6% growth), Mahindra & Mahindra (5%), Nissan (96.9%), Renault (590%), Volkswagen (22%).

While, Tata Motors, Nissan India and Volkswagen India posted double digit sales growth figures for September 2016, and Renault India posted triple digit sales growth, it was on a much smaller base compared to Maruti Suzuki. 

Maruti Suzuki way ahead of competition

Maruti Suzuki, which commands nearly 47% of the domestic market, sold 1,37,321 units in the domestic market, bettering its September 2015 figure (1,06,083 units) by 29.4%, its highest-ever monthly figures. Maruti Suzuki's total sales (domestic + exports) stood at 1,49,143 units, up 31.1% from September last year, also its best-ever monthly sales figures. 

To put things into perspective, ten carmakers sold a total of 1,37,338 units in September, while Maruti Suzuki alone sold 1,37,321 units in the month. This means, for every two cars sold in the domestic market, Maruti Suzuki sold one car. Carmakers sold nearly 2,74,659 units in September 2016. The second most cars sold in the month were by Hyundai Motors -- 42,600 units. 

"The numbers are reflection of popularity, appreciation and acceptance of our range of models. Ciaz, Baleno, Vitara Brezza, S Cross continue to show good numbers and with customers support, they have emerged segment leaders," MSI Executive Director Marketing & Sales R S Kalsi said, according to PTI.

The carmaker's Utility Vehicles category, which includes the Gypsy, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza, and the Ertiga, registered a growth of 191%, while its popular Alto and WagonR contributed 24.8% to the sales growth. Maruti Suzuki sold 6,544 units (52.5% growth on month) of its popular Ciaz in September. 

Single digit growth makers

Ford, M&M, and Toyota posted single digit sales growth in the month. Ford India sold 9,018 units, supported by "good monsoons, the Seventh Pay Commission payout, and reasonable inflation which is helping drive the Indian automotive industry," Anurag Mehrotra, executive director, Marketing, Sales & Service at Ford India, was quoted by PTI as saying. 

Tata Motors sold 42,961 units of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles in September in the domestic market, a growth of 5%. Tata Motors'  Passenger Vehicles Business Unit President, Mayank Pareek, said its new small car, the Tiago acted as the pull-factor, while other models are also getting good sales" despite the inauspicious month of Shradh.

Pareek expects to see a good festive season, with the uptick in demand continuing in October and November. 

Toyota's crowning glory in September was the recently launched Innova Crysta, which received an overwhelming response from the market, the carmaker's director and Senior VP, Sales & Marketing N Raja, said. The company sold 11,376 units in the country, with demand for the Crysta thriving after the government lifted the ban on diesel cars with 2,000cc-plus engine capacity.

Volkswagen sold 3,929 units in the month, up 22% from the 3,226 models sold in the same period last year. 

Fall in sales

The only two carmakers that saw their sales declining in the month, were, General Motors adn Honda Cars India. 

While General Motors sold 2,101 units compared to 2,478 units, according to Business Standard; Honda Cars India sold 15,034 units, down from the 18,509 units sold in the same period last year, a 19% decline.
