Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Akamai delivers record web traffic during Indian election results

The Lok Sabha elections saw huge voter turnout and many changes in the political structure of the country. From a new Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a smaller and firmer Cabinet, Indians have a lot to look forward to. Besides this, even media conglomerates had a lot to look forward to as their web/television traffic went spiralling up with public thronging with anticipation to monitor the proceedings.

The major events being Narendra Modi's win in the elections and his swearing in with SAARC members at the  Rashtrapathi Bhavan. 

Akamai Technologies the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimizing and securing online content and business applications announced that traffic on its Intelligent Platform reached an all-time high in India on the day of the General election results.

The huge spike was driven by end-user demand for minute-by-minute updates on the results. Akamai saw five times increase in web traffic across all its media clients in India with the predominant traffic being on the websites of ECI and NDTV.

Akamai's solutions, built on its Intelligent Platform, provided the reliability and scalability needed to support high levels of user traffic for ECI website on the day of the election results. ECI website recorded 450 million user hits in a single day and at peak offloaded 99% of its traffic on Akamai's Intelligent Platform.

"Election day in India is a significant event in the country and is followed by people not only within India but also those around the world who want to see updates and results immediately. On the day of the election results, we saw a massive spike in traffic on our website with 450 million hits, the largest ever online hits on our election site. Managing such high volumes of traffic on a single day requires a robust online infrastructure.
