According to research firm IDC, smartphone shipments in India jumped 21.4% in the July-September quarter to 28.3 million units, buoyed by a three-fold jump in demand for 4G-enabled devices.
Chinese technology giant Lenovo on Tuesday said it has seen shipments of Lenovo and Motorola handsets in India grow 63.2% to over eight million units in 2015. This is against a shipment of about 4.9 million units in 2014.
"We have seen a phenomenal response from the Indian market and are among the leading players here. We have seen device shipments growing from 4.9 million in 2014 to eight million-plus in 2015 (Lenovo and Motorola)," Lenovo India Director (Smartphones) Sudhin Mathur said here.
He added that a major chunk of the sales was coming from Motorola but declined to give specific details. Lenovo had acquired Motorola Mobility in a $2.9 billion deal from tech giant Google in 2014.
India saw about 75 million devices being shipped in the January-September 2015 period.

Samsung was the largest player with 24% share of the smartphone market, followed by Micromax (16.7%), Intex (10.8%), Lenovo Group (Lenovo and Motorola) (9.5%) and Lava (4.7%).
Lenovo on Tuesday launched a new device -- Vibe K4 Note -- equipped with its new TheaterMax feature, based on Virtual Reality technology. The device will be available from January 19 through a flash sale model on eCommerce portal Amazon.in bundled with a VR Headset (Rs 12,499). The handset will also be available without the headset for Rs 11,999.
The TheaterMax feature converts any multimedia content to become immersive, giving users a virtual large screen cinematic experience when viewed through a VR headset. "More than 50% of digital content is consumed on mobile devices today, and smartphones continue to be peoples' primary personal entertainment device," Mathur said.
Lenovo TheaterMax, powered by Lenovo VR, sets the company apart as it meets the needs of consumers at an extremely friendly price-point, he added.
The K4 Note features a 5.5-inch display, 3GB RAM, octa-core processor, 16GB internal memory (expandable up to 128 GB), twin front ported stereo speakers enabled by Dolby Atmos, 13 MP rear and 5 MP front camera and 3,300 mAh battery.
