If liquor baron Vijay Mallya thought a severance package of Rs 515 crore was an easy way out his problems, he was wrong.

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Mallya on Thursday, responding to a bank consortium plea, led by the State Bank of India (SBI) over a Rs 9,000 crore loan payment.

The Attorney General told the Supreme Court that Mallya has already left the country.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that the plea has been moved by 17 banks, including SBI, against Mallya whose various firms have taken loans from them.

The banks, through Rohatgi, said that Mallya had reportedly expressed a desire to settle closer to his children in the United Kingdom, following the Rs 515 crore deal with Diageo.

Mallya's spokesperson said she had no information about his whereabouts and that he was communicating only through email, according a report by a leading daily.

Despite all these accusations, a defiant Mallya challenged the 'wilful defaulter' tag put on him by the banks, and on Monday said, “I have always lived an honourable life and the calumny notwithstanding, shall continue to do so. As to the allegations in media, all I can say is I hope some sobriety and sense will prevail and truth not held a hostage to TRPs.”

Mallya splurges post Kingfisher Airlines' shutdown

Just a few months earlier, on December 18, 2015, Mallya was said to have thrown a lavish party to celebrate his 60th birthday in Goa. The three-day long celebration had world famous musician Enrique Iglesias flown down for the event, said a report by Indiatimes.com. Around 500-600 guests were expected to be at the party. This was despite SBI announcing that he was 'wilful defaulter'.

Mallya has spent heavily on his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) even while Rs 350 crore in Kingfisher Airline employee salaries remain pending. He has spent over Rs 76.39 crore on the acquisition of players from 2013 to 2016.

The IPL auction in 2013 saw Mallya spend around $1.8 million (Rs 12.14 crore) in the acquisition of players, according to data from ESPNcricinfo.com. In 2014, he spent around Rs 30 crore in the IPL auctions. While in the 2015 IPL player auction, Mallya spent Rs 18.8 crore on player bids; during 2016 the spends were at Rs 15.45 crore.

Apart from this, Mallya in February 2014 splurged Rs 4 crore to buy a race horse called 'Air Support'. According to a report by a leading news daily, it was at the time among the highest paid by Bangalore breeders.
