The Labour and Employment Ministry has rolled out initiatives to encourage workers in the unorganised sector to open bank accounts, amid the government's demonetization move to promote a cashless economy.

Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya told the press on Wednesday, that a campaign was launched on November 26, to help open bank accounts for workers in the unorganised sector like construction, beedi, scheme workers like Anganwadi, Asha and cine workers, who still don't have bank accounts.

"The objective of the campaign is to ensure that all workers come into banking fold and their wages are paid directly into their account. This will not only prevent exploitation of workers and payment of wages without cut but will also inculcate the habit of using cashless transactions," Dattatreya said.

For this, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has been organising camps in collaboration with the Department of Banking and Finance Ministry, to open bank accounts through field offices like ESIC, EPFO and Labour offices. So far,  15,134 camps have been held in the country till yesterday. Of these, EPFO held 2324, ESIC held 2878 and CLC held 9284 Camps, a statement from the government said.

So far, 3,87,037 bank accounts have been opened, the statement said, and over 9 lakh persons had enrolled to open accounts, according to the Ministry of Finance. The government has been actively pushing banks to encourage people to open bank accounts in the midst of the cash crunch situation. Banks have seen a huge spike in the number of new accounts opened, since November 8 when the government moved to decommission the use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. This pertains to both, Jan Dhan and non-Jan Dhan bank accounts.
