British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), owned by Tata Motors, plans to assemble its Jaguar XF 2.2 litre diesel saloon in India.

The company currently sells Jaguar XF 3-litre diesel at a price of about Rs51 lakh, which is a completely imported vehicle.
Jaguar XF 2.2-litre diesel will be the lowest priced Jaguar in India. The company is launching the locally assembled car at a price of Rs44.5 lakh (ex-showroom pre-octroi).
“XF is one of our highest selling cars already in India and that’s the reason we came in with another variant. It was doing very well with the 3-litre diesel engine at that price, so we decided to give customers a wider choice. This will attract more customers and make it more available,” said Rohit Suri, vice-president - premier car division, JLR.
The company has already set up an assembly line at its Pune plant for the new XF. It, however, did not disclose capacity added or the investments thereon.
The new XF will compete with BMW 5 series and Audi A6 2-litre diesel category. “The car will distinguish itself from the other cars in the competition with unique features. That’s the reason it is a significant launch for Jaguar in India,” said Suri.
On volumes, the company said it expects fairly significant numbers from the new car and is geared to meet demand.
It is also looking at further expanding its range of locally assembled cars in India, the company said, but gave no clarity on the vehicles being considered.
The luxury car industry grew 30% last calendar. Sales of companies like BMW and Mercedes remained flat due to an overall slowdown in the automobile industry, though Audi grew over 60%.
JLR’s wholesale numbers were 2,393 cars last calendar, registering a growth of 32%.
JLR currently has 17 outlets covering 15 cities and is looking at taking this number to 20 outlets by the end of this calendar.
