Jaguar Land Rover sold 4% more vehicles in January, with its total retail sales touching 47,693 units in the month compared to the same period last year.

JLR posted its best ever January sales in 2017, the Tata Motors-run UK-based carmaker said, on the back of the success of the Jaguar F-PACE, Jaguar XF, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Sport.

While the retail sales of Jaguar cars was up 76% at 13,949 vehicles compared to January last year, the retail sales of Land Rover were down 11% at 33,744 vehicles in the same period last year.

January 2017 Retail sales (volume) Percentage change
Jaguar  13,949 76%
Land Rover 33,744 (11%)

For Jaguar, the success of the Jaguar F-PACE as well as solid sales of the XF, including the long wheel base XFL in China) and the XJ contributed to the massive leap in monthly sales, a statement to the BSE said.

However, for Land Rover, solid sales of the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Sport were outweighed as the Defender and Discovery were phased out ahead of the all-new Discovery expected later in the quarter.

Geographically, JLR's sales in North America were up 29%, China 14% and the UK 2% but down in Europe 8% and other overseas markets, up 19%.

The shares of Tata Motors were down 2.17% or Rs 11.40 apiece at Rs 513.90 from previous close.
