Soon after Cognizant announced it was laying off 6,000 employees after a performance review, making it yet another IT company which has announced lay offs after the recent results, its IT professionals have come together to petition against the move deeming it 'unfair' and 'unjustified' dismissal.

According to a report by Business Standard, the Forum of IT Employees and NDLF It employees wing are petitioning the Tamil Nadu government against these dismissals that come at a time when technology is changing and automation takes precedence.

The report said, "The FITE has filed a petition at the Tamil Nadu labour department to protect the interests of software engineers who have been sacked on performance grounds."

Cognizant last week announced a voluntary separation programme for directors, associate VPs and senior VPs. Some 1,000 executives are expected to go. The company, one of the top performers in the industry, is expected to eventually cut at least 6,000 jobs+ , or 2.3% of its total workforce, according to an earlier Times of India report.

The petition was initially filed by ten Cognizant employees through the Forum of IT Employees with the assistant commissioner of labour arguing they were forced to sign voluntary resignation letters, the TOI report added.

Recently, Wipro announced it would be cutting 10% of its workforce if revenues don't grow, and Infosys said nearly 1,000 employees in job level 6 and abvoe (group project managers, project managers, senior architects, and higher levels) were likely to be asked to leave.
