Sitting in her modest office charting out product strategies, Bangalore-based Sujata Virdhe appears like any other budding entrepreneur who is keen to make a mark in her venture by designing new products catering to different customer demands.

She seems optimistic about her products like microscopes, telescopes, magnets, etc receiving an enthusiastic response from her target customers, who primarily include children from class 5-12.

However a casual conversation unravels her background which is closely associated with the prestigious Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).

After working in Isro for 22 long years as a senior scientist, when Virdhe decided to quit her high profile post, she was determined to utilise the knowledge and experience gained from working at the highly technical organisation to craft attractive products and games for school kids, which can help decode complex science concepts and make them appear interesting too.

“Very few students get their science and math basics clear in their school days. I always wanted to explore my creative side and felt that designing products which can help kids learn complex concepts in a fun way would prove beneficial for several students, while simultaneously giving me a platform to spread out my creativity,” says Virdhe, who has a PhD in applied physics and has handled 5 satellite projects at Isro.

Thus with her own savings, Virdhe started L Green Ventures in December 2009 and soon launched her first product, the nebula solar goggles for watching the solar eclipse.

“I have 2-3 people who work with me and help in manufacturing the products. We have over 25 products and though I don’t keep an accurate count, my estimate is that we reach out to over a few lakh students across India,” says Virdhe.

L Green Ventures has come out with products that can help kids learn tables through snakes and ladder, kits for growing crystals for helping understand concepts in chemistry, play kits to understand concepts like magnetism, electricity, light, sound and other concepts in physics.

“After we make the products, they go to science museums and planetariums where students and parents can make purchases. I don’t have any targets of wanting to sell these many units in the next so many years. The responses we have received from both parents and students are encouraging and that is what matters to us,” says Virdhe.
