Indian Railways lost over Rs 1,600 crore to concessional fares

This includes concessions given to senior citizens, patients, physically challenged passengers, and more.

Railways has suffered a loss of over Rs 1,602 crore due to the concession given in passenger fares during 2015-16, Rajya Sabha was told on Friday.

The revenue foregone due to concession in some of major categories, including senior citizens, patients, physically challenged and Izzat scheme in monthly season tickets, in the fiscal 2015-16 was Rs 1,602.94 crore, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply.

Railways provides concession in passenger fare in 24 categories including war widows, press correspondents, awardee teachers, Prime Minister Shram Awardees and President Police

Medal awardees among others.
