India's rank on global innovation index improves to 66

Government will take steps to accelerate innovation in India, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

India's rank on the Global Innovation Index improved to 66th position, up from the 2015 rank of being number 81. 

The improvement of India's rank is significant because it has come after five years of straight drops in its ranking. 

At the launch of the Global Innovation Index report 2016 in New Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government is expected form a group to identify and implement steps to give innovating in India a push. 

"A dedicated group will be formed to identify and implement expeditiously steps government can take to accelerate further India's innovation," she said.

The list was topped by Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States of America (US), Finland and Singapore. The list is released jointly by Cornell University, INSEAD, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) AT Kearney and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
